USAF Awards Boeing Contract for 26 E-7's

Announced on Feb. 28, the USAF has green-lighted Boeing to begin work on 26 E-7A aircraft, a contract worth $1.2 billion. The E-7 was developed for Australia's Royal Air Force, is based on the B737 airframe, and was dubbed the "Wedgetail." The Wedgetail provides battlefield management and advanced airborne moving target indication, as well as command-and-control capabilities. The Air Force currently operates the E-3 Sentry, an airborne warning and control system aircraft, or AWACS, and plans to retire 15 of them this year, equaling half the fleet.
