On Jan. 16, Qantas flight QF144 departed Auckland, NZ (AKL) for Sydney, AS (SYD) when it declared an emergency mid-flight due to an engine malfunction. The flight had been cruising at FL360 and was an hour away from landing when the incident occurred, leading the crew to descend to FL200 and hobble onward to Sydney on one engine. The crew revoked the mayday call and changed it to a PAN (possible assistance needed) and would land safely at Sydney. No injuries were reported, and the Boeing 737-800 will undergo inspection.
