On Feb. 14, an American Airlines flight operating as AAL 1775 was enroute from LAX to Dulles (IAD) when a passenger attempted to open the aircraft door, leading to a diversion into Kansas City Intl. (MCI). The DoJ released a report on the incident, stating "The man told flight attendants people were attempting to hurt him and they followed him on the plane." The man then made his way to the forward galley, where "the man then grabbed some plastic silverware, removed the napkin around it and placed the silverware in his shirt sleeve “holding it like a shank." The man also grabbed a champagne bottle & tried to break it on the counter, and when that didn't work, he attempted to open the door, leading to a flight attendant to hit him on the head twice with a coffee pot. Several passengers, including an off-duty police officer, assisted in subduing the 50 year old, 6' 3" 240lbs man. The DoJ says the passenger "has been charged with one count of assaulting and intimidating a flight attendant and thereby interfering in the performance of the flight attendant’s duties."
